Research shows school-based social-emotional learning (SEL) programs have a positive impact on students’ academics. To help prepare educators to successfully deliver SEL programming, Aperture Education created the Educator Social-Emotional Reflection and Training (EdSERT) program, professional development specifically designed to help educators build their own SEL skills, so they are prepared to deliver SEL instruction in the classroom.
Aperture will host a free webinar at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on July 30, 2019, to share more about EdSERT and offer insight and strategies to support educator social-emotional development. To register, visit http://bit.ly/2YlOFjV. The webinar will also be available on-demand.
“Our goal is to support effective social-emotional learning programs in schools and one of the best ways to do this is to support educators who are teaching these important skills,” said Jessica Adamson, CEO of Aperture Education. “EdSERT helps educators evaluate and build their own social-emotional competencies – everything from controlling emotions and impulses to adapting if a lesson or activity doesn’t go as planned. When they can practice and model these skills themselves it helps them feel better prepared to teach these skills to students.”
EdSERT offers a comprehensive set of research-based resources to support the social and emotional development of K-12 teachers and out-of-school time program staff members. It provides training to help educators understand what social-emotional competence is and why it’s important. Like all other Aperture Education products, it is data-driven with self-assessments to help educators reflect on their social and emotional competencies and identify growth opportunities in areas such as productivity, adaptability, controlling emotions and impulses, stress management, and more. EdSERT is self-managed by the educators and provides strategies to help them enhance and practice specific social-emotional skills so they can model them in the classroom.
EdSERT includes:
An administrator guide with recommendations for implementing EdSERT and tips for incorporating SEL into staff meetings or in-service training sessions.
Educator competency guides which offer a self-reflective assessment, a personal planning tool and strategies aligned to the self-assessment.
Professional development that features eight competency-specific modules and an overview module, along with nine recorded webinars.
An online supplemental resources portal.
EdSERT, which will be available for the 2019-20 school year, can be used as a standalone program or as a supplement to an existing SEL curriculum. It focuses on promoting the same eight SEL competencies included in Aperture’s DESSA Comprehensive SEL System: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, goal-directed behavior, personal responsibility, decision-making and optimistic thinking.
