The Board of Trustees of The Harley School is thrilled to announce that, after an extensive search, Kathryn Kaiser has enthusiastically accepted its invitation to serve as the Transitional Head of School. Kathryn will officially begin in her position on July 1, 2023 for the 2023-24 school year.

“We were struck by Kathryn’s depth of understanding, focus on intentional community-building, clear communication, and, most importantly, her love for and commitment to students,” said Ted Townsend, Board of Trustees Secretary and incoming Board President, and co-leader of the transitional search with Board Vice President Paul Sisson.

During the board-led search process, Kathryn immediately separated herself from the other candidates through her extensive administrative experience, leadership skills, and thoughtful approach to community-building, noted Townsend. “These qualities made her the ideal choice to lead Harley during this critical transitional period.”

Kathryn served 20 years as an administrator at the K-8 The School at Columbia University, which is affiliated with Columbia University. Most recently, she served as their Interim Head of School, and is currently transitioning the next Head of School there into their new role. She received an EdD in educational technology, an Ed.M. in private school leadership from Teachers College, and an MPA from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia, in addition to undergraduate and master’s degrees in elementary and special education preceding her time at Columbia.

With a family connection to this area, Kathryn is thrilled to move to Rochester to join The Harley School, as her own educational philosophy of a “student-first” approach aligns with the School’s commitment to its students through collaborative and innovative approaches.

“Kathryn promises to be a transparent, accountable leader, and is truly committed to helping us live our mission as we embark on the search for our next Head of School,” continued Townsend. “After interviewing all the finalists, one board member said it best: ‘There is no other choice except Kathryn Kaiser!’”
