CommonLit has released the edtech nonprofit’s 2018 Impact Report. The young organization – founded in 2013, with digital site launched in 2016 – has demonstrated exponential domestic growth and increase in its international reach. The total number of registered teachers and students relying on CommonLit grew from 3 million at the start of 2018, to over 10 million as of April 2019, spanning 65% of US public schools. What’s more, the majority served are Title I, high-poverty schools.
Michelle Brown, founder and CEO of CommonLit, said, “CommonLit entered a new frontier in 2018. We tripled the number of students we serve, built a full suite of products and services to complement our free literacy program, and internationalized our digital site. Through these achievements, we demonstrated that CommonLit can and will make a drastic impact on the lives of millions of students.”
CommonLit’s mission is to ensure that every student graduates with the reading, writing, communication, and problem-solving skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. About 63 percent of high school seniors graduate every year without these critical skills, and 24 percent of 8th graders are not able to read at even a basic level. This knowledge gap will haunt students for the rest of their lives.
By making its literacy program available for free, CommonLit has lowered the barrier to entry for the most underserved schools and classrooms around the country. The organization also enjoys exceptional good will from the teachers that it serves. At its current growth rate of over 20,000 new registered users every school day, CommonLit is on track to reach its goal of serving 20 million teachers and students by 2020, and is poised to become a leader in the EdTech field.
