Scoot Education – an innovative educational staffing company – today announced the full launch of “TeachStart,” a nonprofit 501(c)3 entity offering a pathway to career teaching for aspiring teachers who have historically been blocked by financial and systemic obstacles.

Launched following a successful pilot program during the 2020-2021 school year, TeachStart is an “earn-and-learn” program that offers aspiring teachers the chance to earn a stable salary from substitute teaching while they work towards their debt-free teaching credential. The program removes all upfront barriers to teaching, paying for testing, permits and background checks while offering participants a living salary with highly subsidized benefits and paid time off.

“With TeachStart, we’re offering a try-before-you-buy approach to a career in education. As it stands, 50 percent of teachers end up going through all this training and effort only to quit within five years, while still under mountains of debt,” said James Sanders, U.S. CEO of Scoot Education. “Here, we take a gradual approach and give them ample time and preparation for a meaningful career in education. Not only are we removing barriers, but we’re helping to shape a more passionate, longer-lasting pool of teachers, which is what districts sorely need right now.”

“TeachStart offers a transformative new way for people to become teachers,” said Jenny Jordan, executive director of TeachStart. “Oftentimes with recent or upcoming graduates, we see a real desire to teach that is often doused by this gauntlet of obstacles in their path. We’re here to say that if you want to become a teacher, you can.”
