CORALVILLE, Iowa, December 16, 2025 — To accelerate reading achievement in schools nationwide, Foundations in Learning, creator of the online WordFlight™ literacy intervention solution, is now accepting applications for its Spring 2026 Fluency Innovator Grants. Selected teachers and administrators, who serve students in grades 3 and above, will each receive a free semester-long subscription to WordFlight, as well as accompanying implementation support and professional learning, this spring.
All applications are due by January 30, 2026. United States-based educators are encouraged to apply early as a limited number of grants will be awarded on a rolling first-come, first-serve basis.
“Educators deserve literacy interventions that are easy to use and proven to make a real difference,” said Allison Zimmermann, CEO of Foundations in Learning. “WordFlight checks these boxes while helping students build the critical foundational skills needed for reading fluency—decoding and automaticity. This spring and beyond, we look forward to providing educators who are new to our program with the tools and support they need to help struggling readers, particularly those in or approaching middle school, build their reading fluency and confidence.”
Aligned with the science of reading and based in the science of learning, WordFlight bridges the gap between phonics and fluency helping to move 90 percent of struggling adolescents—including 85 percent of middle school students—to proficient in foundational reading skills in one school year. For example, one dual immersion teacher in California who previously received a Fluency Innovator Grant helped double the number of fluent readers in her class after just one semester of using WordFlight. “Finding WordFlight was a gamechanger,” she said.
Other former grantees had similar experiences, with one educator stating, “My most struggling readers looked forward to WordFlight EVERY day and were upset if they could not come to my room for their WordFlight lesson.”
Educators looking to achieve measurable results and who are new to using WordFlight—including teachers applying for their individual class or administrators applying for their school building or district—must agree to certain requirements to be considered for the Spring 2026 grant. This includes, but is not limited to, educators using the program with students in grades 3-8 whose difficulty with word recognition skills interfere with reading fluency and comprehension.
Applicants must participate in the provided training and professional development in using the program, as well as agree to have students use WordFlight’s online component 60 minutes per week throughout the grant period.
Schools and districts that have more than one application will be given highest priority to receive a Fluency Innovator Grant.
