The Learning Counsel’s Learning Futures & Tech Media Meeting in Warrenton, Virginia brought together educational leaders for a dynamic and inspiring panel discussion moderated by LeiLani Cauthen, CEO of the Learning Counsel. The conversation centered on a simple but revealing opening question: “What are you most proud of?”

Representing two Northern Virginia districts, the panel featured:

  • Dr. Michelle Reid, Superintendent, Fairfax County Public Schools
  • Dr. Meaghan Brill, Deputy Superintendent, Fauquier County Public Schools
  • Nick Napolitano, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, Fauquier County Public Schools

Their answers painted a collective picture of districts deeply committed to student opportunity, community partnership, and the enduring promise of public education.

Opportunities Beyond the Traditional: Nick Napolitano on Broadening Student Pathways

Nick Napolitano opened the discussion with a focus on student opportunity—not just in academics, but in real-world, career-aligned pathways.

“There are lots of things I'm proud of,” he began, “but I think what I’m most proud of is the different types of opportunities we allow our students.”

For Napolitano, the heart of pride lies in the district’s diverse programming: cybersecurity, nursing, skilled trades, and other specialized tracks that go far beyond the conventional subjects people often associate with K–12 education.

“When people think of K–12, they think of math, English, science, social studies… not that those aren’t important. But there are so many other opportunities we offer our students to help them become well-rounded individuals.”

His comments underscored a major shift in modern education—one where schools increasingly serve as launchpads for personalized futures, not just providers of academics.

Meeting Students Where They Are: Dr. Meaghan Brill on Personalization and Partnership

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Meaghan Brill expanded on the theme with a focus on student-centered design and family partnership.

“We really have a diverse offering for our students, and we try to meet them where they are and then encourage them to explore opportunities they might not have considered.”

Brill emphasized that because Fauquier is a mid-sized division, it can be intentional and nimble in shaping experiences that fit student needs.

“We’re very mindful of what our students need,” she said. “And we also think about how we can partner with them and their families so we’re supportive.”

She highlighted that every decision—programmatic or instructional—circles back to one core principle: being student-centered and mindful of the whole child.

Staying Curious: Dr. Michelle Reid on the Power of Public Education

Fairfax County Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid closed the opening round by spotlighting the spirit of curiosity and creativity she sees daily in her district.

“I’m most proud of our children and our staff—the amazing things they create every day—and the fact that they stay curious.”

Reid’s pride extended beyond student and staff accomplishments to a broader philosophical commitment:

“I’m proud that we remain committed to the power and promise of public education.”

Her reflection served as a reminder that, even amid rapid technological change and shifting societal expectations, the mission of public schools remains both relevant and vital.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Across districts of different sizes and demographics, the panelists shared a common message: schools must be adaptive, inclusive, and opportunity-rich. Whether through expanding career pathways, personalizing learning, or sustaining a culture of curiosity, each leader reinforced the idea that the future of education lies in meeting students’ diverse needs while holding firm to the values of public education.

The Warrenton Learning Futures & Tech Media Meeting revealed not only what these leaders are proud of, but also what they are building: systems that honor every learner and prepare them for a world full of possibility.
