At the recent Learning Counsel Learning Futures & Tech Media Meeting, Dr. Jeremy Owoh, Superintendent of Jacksonville North Pulaski School District, shared insights on cultivating innovation and sustaining educational excellence. Drawing on his dual role as superintendent and board president for ISTE/ASCD, Owoh highlighted how global perspectives are shaping local educational strategies.

Global Conversations, Local Lessons

Owoh began by reflecting on his international experiences, including presenting at the ISTE/ASCD Summit in Ghana.

“The same discussions that we’re having here in the U.S.—student engagement, teacher retention, collaborative teaming—are happening across the world,” he observed. “It’s remarkable that educators everywhere face similar roadblocks and opportunities.”

These conversations reinforced a key belief for Owoh: continuous learning is essential, even for those in leadership positions. “Even as a superintendent, I feel it’s important to continue learning,” he said. “I’m not standing in front of you as an expert; I’m here to share what has worked for us in Jacksonville and what we’ve learned from global colleagues.”

From Moral Imperative to Innovation Imperative

Dr. Owoh framed his district’s philosophy through the lens of the moral imperative, a principle emphasizing that educators must do everything possible to ensure students receive the highest-quality educational experience.

“Your moral imperative,” he explained, “is to make sure our young people get the very best education. Whatever it takes—that’s your moral imperative.”

Building on this, Owoh introduced the innovation imperative, a concept that underscores the need for bold and forward-thinking practices in education.

“The innovation imperative is about ensuring that we do not shy away from innovation,” he said. “It’s about embedding creativity, experimentation, and new strategies into teaching and learning so that our students are fully prepared for the future.”

Converting Challenges into Catalysts

A key takeaway from Owoh’s presentation was the notion of turning challenges into catalysts for change. By recognizing obstacles as opportunities, Jacksonville North Pulaski has been able to integrate innovation into daily practices, from curriculum design to professional learning communities.

This approach aligns with his work with ISTE and ASCD, where Owoh collaborates with educators to transform systemic barriers into actionable solutions, reinforcing the district’s commitment to both innovation and equity.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Owoh’s presentation made clear that successful educational leadership blends ethical responsibility with creative vision. By honoring the moral imperative while embracing the innovation imperative, Jacksonville North Pulaski is positioning itself to not just respond to change—but to lead it.

“Our goal is to ensure every student receives the best possible education,” he concluded. “And to do that, we must innovate relentlessly, learn continuously, and never shy away from the challenges that will shape tomorrow.”
