At the Tampa Learning Futures & Tech Media Meeting, Dr. Chris Dunning, Principal of Wendell Krinn Technical High School (K Tech), shared the remarkable transformation story of his school. His presentation focused on the power of leadership, culture, and technology in turning around a struggling institution.

Dr. Dunning began by recounting the history of K Tech, which was formerly Ridgewood High School. Originally built in 1976, Ridgewood had suffered from declining performance, earning a D rating for three consecutive years. The school was at risk of state takeover, putting immense pressure on the district to implement immediate reforms.

Recognizing the urgency, the district appointed Dr. Dunning to lead the turnaround effort. He arrived in March of the prior year, determined to transform the school’s culture and academic outcomes.

The Solution: A Cultural and Technological Overhaul

Dr. Dunning firmly believes that culture is the foundation of any successful school. His first priority was to inspire and engage both staff and students, ensuring that they were willing to embrace change.

However, the district soon decided that the necessary transformation could not be achieved in just one year. The decision was made to close Ridgewood High School and reopen it as Wendell Krinn Technical High School—a bold move that disrupted the entire school community.

This transition created uncertainty among teachers and staff, many of whom faced job insecurity. Despite this, Dr. Dunning remained committed to supporting students and improving academic performance.

One of the key pillars of K Tech’s transformation was embracing modern technology. Dr. Dunning emphasized that staying up to date with technological advancements was essential to preparing students for the future.

  • Integration of cutting-edge technology into the curriculum ensured that students gained real-world skills.
  • A focus on STEM and technical education provided students with pathways to high-demand careers.
  • Digital tools were used to enhance learning experiences and help students achieve proficiency in core subjects like reading and math.

Through a combination of cultural shifts, technological advancements, and academic support, Wendell Krinn Technical High School has emerged as a leader in career and technical education.

Dr. Dunning’s story is a testament to the power of leadership, vision, and adaptability. By prioritizing culture and innovation, K Tech is setting a new standard for technical education, equipping students with the skills and confidence to succeed in the modern workforce.

  • Culture drives change – Building a positive and motivated school environment is critical.
  • Technology is a game-changer – Modern tools can enhance learning and prepare students for future careers.
  • Strong leadership is essential – Transformational change requires vision, resilience, and commitment.

Dr. Dunning’s experience at K Tech serves as an inspiring model for educators looking to turn challenges into opportunities through innovation and leadership.
