Free June 11, 2020 webinar features early elementary school teacher Sara VanderWel who plays the role of “Miss Sara” in The Character Tree videos

Character education in the early years can help set students up for success in school, and in life. To help teachers incorporate character lessons throughout the school day, The Character Tree, an online video resource for character development, is hosting a free webinar at 3 p.m. Eastern Time/noon Pacific Time on June 11, 2020.

The webinar, “How to Incorporate Character Development Across Curriculum,” features popular elementary school teacher Sara VanderWel, who plays “Miss Sara” in The Character Tree’s videos. She will share how she structures each school day to support social-emotional learning and character development and provide practical advice for teachers to use in their own classrooms.  “When schools eventually reconvene, character education will be even more important to support students’ social-emotional needs and re-engage them in learning after so many months away from the classroom,” said Bill Apperson, VanderWel’s father and chairman of Apperson, which developed The Character Tree. “Sara has more than a decade of experience teaching character development in early elementary school and she has developed a strong following in the teacher community. This webinar will be a great resource for teachers who want to incorporate more character education into their lessons.”

This webinar will cover how to:

Support social-emotional and character development throughout the day in the classroom

Interweave opportunities for social emotional learning and character development across the curriculum

Use intentional language to promote students’ social-emotional and character development

Participants will also receive a character education distance learning handout: “Lessons for Hope.” Those who can't attend live can register to receive a copy of the recording after the webinar to watch at their convenience.

VanderWel has served as an early elementary teacher for more than 10 years. She specializes in literacy and writing and in 2018 received the Bonnie Campbell Hill Literacy Leader Award for Washington State. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and a B.S. in Spanish Language and Literature and an M.S. in K-6 Reading and Literacy. She also runs a Teachers Pay Teachers site called The Primary Pal. In her role as “Miss Sara” in The Character Tree’s videos, VanderWel guides discussions with puppet children and “Gray Squirrel” as they learn about positive character traits.

The webinar will be part of an ongoing series of webinars by The Character Tree to provide tips on how to support character education in schools.
