In the 2021 academic year, nonprofit VHS Learning celebrates its 25th year as a supplemental online high school program – the first nationwide online program in the United States. Enrollment for VHS Learning’s fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters is now open and students and school districts can register students for more than 220 unique online courses at https://go.vhslearning.org/registernow.

“VHS Learning’s world-class online core, elective, and AP courses have earned a reputation for excellence,” said Carol (Ribeiro) DeFuria, President & CEO of VHS Learning. “Of the VHS Learning students who took the 2019 exam for AP Physics C Mechanics, 88% of scored a 3 or higher, exceeding the national average of 71%.” In the course, students investigate topics such as Newton’s Laws of motion, energy, linear and angular momentum, gravitation, oscillatory motion, electric and magnetic fields, Gauss’s Law, circuits and Faraday’s Law. They also participate in hands-on and virtual experiments and class discussions, contribute to class data, and attend weekly lab meetings.

VHS Learning offers schools and students extensive STEM options through its more than 40 science courses, over 20 math courses, and 14 computer science and technology courses, including the popular AP Computer Science Principles. AP Computer Science Principles helps students develop critical thinking skills essential for success across all disciplines, such as use of computational tools to analyze and study data, and working with large data sets to analyze, visualize, and draw conclusions from trends. The course is designed to foster problem-solving skills and creativity in students with diverse backgrounds and interests. “We’re pleased that since its inception, more than 90% of students taking this fully online course each year have passed the AP Computer Science Principles AP Exam,” noted DeFuria.

All VHS Learning courses are taught by certified high school teachers who undergo a rigorous professional development program to ensure they can effectively teach in an online environment. “For the last 25 years, all students taking VHS Learning online courses have received instruction that enables them to collaborate with their teachers and peers from around the world,” said DeFuria. “In addition to acquiring a firm academic base, they gain real-world skills that prepare them for the future. In the spring 2020 semester we heard from many of our students that their VHS Learning experiences helped them thrive during these challenging times. Students taking VHS Learning courses had a leg up on their peers because our courses are designed to be offered entirely online, using online learning best practices. Students who must now complete their education remotely were well-prepared and had continuity of learning because of their VHS Learning experience.”
