Children with better attention are able to absorb more information, which means they learn better. TALi is a two-step program on iOS or Android tablets to help assess and strengthen attention in early childhood education.

Step one: To understand each student’s unique attention profile, TALi DETECT offers a non-invasive, digital attention assessment that measures key attention skills. The assessment is completed in a single 25-minute session, where students work through seven engaging, game-based activities. After completing the assessment, your school will receive a detailed report for every student that outlines their performance in each of the exercises. As part of the report, each child will receive their own unique attention profile that maps their attention abilities against what is considered to be the average result for a child of their age and gender.

Step two: Using each student’s unique attention profile, educators can identify which children may benefit from TALi TRAIN, the first clinically validated program designed to directly strengthen attention in early childhood. The intensive training program offers 25 sessions using game-based activities that target four core attention skills including: selection, focus, control and inhibition. Each session takes approximately 20-25 minutes to complete, and it is recommended, based on research, that the sessions be held five days a week for five weeks. After students complete the program, teachers will have access to post-training attention assessments to see their gains.

Formats/platforms used:

TALi requires wi-fi enabled tablets that use either the Android or iOS systems. Users will also require Wi-Fi access to log in and out of the TALi apps, and to upload completed session data. Headphones are also recommended to eliminate any distractions. Program admins and teachers require a desktop internet browser to manage the upload of children into the TALi program, assign licenses and access results and classroom/individual reports.

Problem solved:

Attention has been shown to be a stronger predictor of academic achievement than IQ. Studies have shown that the most commonly reported childhood issues are related to attention.

Deficiencies in attention can have a detrimental impact on a child’s education, social inclusions and general wellbeing. In fact, it’s estimated that 129 million children globally have severe attention deficits. Many hundreds of millions more are never assessed or diagnosed. At TALi, we’re on a mission to detect signs of inattention in children early so they can access professional support and intervention during their critical years of development, to promote lasting gains.

Primary user age:

TALi is designed for students ages 3-8.

Audience served/subjects addressed:

Children who struggle with attention often find an educational setting challenging. A child unable to focus or attend in class may exhibit disruptive or “daydreaming” behaviors and is sometimes perceived to have learning difficulties. In some cases, an inattentive child can impact the entire class. If a child is unable to sit still and focus they are powerless to absorb information being presented to them.

The learning process begins with attention. Attention skills are used to sit still, stay quiet, focus, and to filter out distractions. Attention also allows information to be taken in and to select what’s important so that your working memory can then recall what’s important later on. Attention not only helps children learn from an academic point of view, it is also linked to improved social relationships and increased self confidence. Children need attention to thrive in a classroom environment.

What makes TALi DETECT and TRAIN unique?

Validated by Gold Standard clinical trials, TALi TRAIN is the first clinically validated program designed to directly strengthen attention in early childhood. Students with better attention absorb information more easily, can focus for longer and are more calm in the classroom. For students who experience difficulties, effective early intervention is important to support positive academic outcomes. Research suggests that strengthening attention in young children can lead to improved short-and long-term outcomes in social, academic and vocational areas/domains.

This two-part program provides a range of unique outcomes:

Step one: To understand each student’s unique attention profile, TALi DETECT offers a non-invasive, digital attention assessment that uses game-based learning activities to measure key attention skills. The assessment is completed in a single, 25-minute session, where students work through seven engaging, game-based exercises that focus on a specific skill set and measures a child’s ability to:

  • Seek out visual targets
  • Assess whether a target is present on screen
  • Monitor information
  • Remain focused on a task
  • Inhibit a response
  • Switch between tasks
  • And visual reaction time

After completing the assessment, your school will receive a detailed report for every student that outlines their performance in each of the seven exercises. As part of the report, each child will receive their own unique attention profile. Here, child performance for each key attention skill is plotted against what is considered to be the average result for a child of their age and gender.

Step two: Using each student’s unique attention profile, educators can identify which children may benefit from TALi TRAIN, the first clinically validated program designed to directly strengthen attention in early childhood. The intensive training program offers 25 sessions using game-based activities that target four core attention skills including:

  • Selection: Blocking out other children talking or playing
  • Focus: Maintaining attention over a period of time
  • Control: Choosing to focus on a lesson, not other things
  • Inhibition: Staying quiet in class rather than speaking out of turn

Each session takes approximately 25-30 minutes to complete, and must be held five days a week for five weeks. After students complete the program, teachers will have access to post-training attention assessments to see their gains.

Here’s what users are saying:

"I’ve seen a really big change in my student. He couldn’t focus at all before. My student that has been undertaking the TALi Training is not the same boy that started the program. It’s been really fabulous to see the results that we’ve been able to get."

--Michelle McLaren, Teacher

"It’s been highly successful in the way that we’ve been able to implement it. It’s been very, very easy. The fact that it’s on a tablet is fantastic. I’m expecting that we’ll see some really good outcomes for them, that they build on even after they’ve finished the program."

--Marcelle Van Maanen, Principal

"A lot of these children that came to us with attention difficulties were also being treated by medical professionals using psychostimulant medication such as Ritalin. As an education developmental psychologist with a keen interest in developmental disorders, TALi seemed to address the gaps that I was looking for as a clinician. As a psychologist, it’s important that all interventions that we endorse are evidence-based. TALi is scientifically proven to be effective, and this gives me great confidence and trust in recommending TALi to parents. Parents are reporting overall improvements in their child’s attention behaviours."

--Maria Karefilakis, Clinic Director, Kare Psychology

I thought my son would be suited to this style of therapy as he loves to play games on his tablet. As he has limited language I simplified the explanation of the program, telling him it was a special game to help him behave better at school. I found that doing TALi TRAIN early in the morning, when he first woke up, or just after breakfast helped him to respond better.”

--Marika, Parent of Adam, a 4 year old with ASD
