IOWA CITY, Iowa, August 4, 2026 — WordFlight™, a Foundations in Learning literacy intervention solution, is now accepting applications for its Fall 2026 Fluency Innovator Grants. Available for teachers and administrators who are committed to accelerating reading achievement in their schools, the grant will provide a free semester-long subscription to WordFlight, along with implementation support and professional learning, to help struggling readers in Grades 3 to 8 make meaningful gains.
WordFlight bridges the gap between phonics and fluency, helping to move 85 percent of struggling students to proficient in foundational reading skills in one school year. Through the program’s powerful combination of a screener, patented diagnostic, instructional program, teacher resources, and ongoing implementation support, WordFlight develops students’ automatic word recognition so they can progress beyond decoding to reach reading fluency.
“Every student deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader and every educator deserves access to research-backed solutions to help make that possible,” said Allison Zimmermann, CEO of Foundations in Learning. “The Fluency Innovator Grants help remove barriers so more schools can experience what’s possible when students receive targeted reading support aligned with the science of reading and based in the science of learning. This fall, we look forward to partnering with educators who share our commitment to helping struggling readers succeed as they implement WordFlight in their classrooms and schools.”
Fluency Innovator Grant recipients have experienced positive reading results in their schools and classrooms. At Albert City-Truesdale Elementary School in Iowa, for example, proficiency in accuracy increased from 82% in the fall to 95% in the spring among students in Grades 3 to 6 using WordFlight. This 13-percentage point improvement brought the cohort to the national proficiency target of 95%.
“Finding WordFlight was a gamechanger,” said another Fluency Innovator Grant recipient who helped double the number of fluent readers in her class after just one semester of using WordFlight.
For the Fall 2026 Fluency Innovator Grants, teachers applying for an individual classroom or administrators applying on behalf of a school or district must be new to WordFlight and meet certain eligibility requirements. Applicants must participate in the provided training and professional learning in using the program, as well as agree to have students use WordFlight’s online component 60 minutes per week throughout the grant period.
All applications are due by September 15, 2026. United States-based educators are encouraged to apply early as a limited number of grants will be awarded on a rolling, first-come, first-served basis. Schools and districts submitting multiple applications will receive priority consideration.
